EC norms guide security in Sankarankoil: IGP

Security arrangements in Sankarankoil, where a by-election will be held on March 18, are being provided as per Election Commission norms, according to Rajesh Das, Inspector General of Police (south zone).

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, he said that adequate police personnel have been deployed in sensitive pockets of the Assembly segment. Security would be provided to political parties and candidates during the campaign.

Asked whether Central forces would be deployed, he said there was no need so far. In case the need arose and in the event of specific instruction from the EC, they would be deployed. “We are functioning as per the model code of conduct.” On the need for action against protesters in Kudankulam, which was pointed out by Union Minister V. Narayanasamy at a meeting in Madurai, the IGP said that cases had been registered as per law.

“We will take action based on the findings of the investigation.”

To a question on the arrest of a German national from a lodge in Nagercoil, Mr. Das said that it was carried out based on inputs from Central intelligence agencies.
