Drill on disaster management

A drill was conducted by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel at the Tamirabharani in Kuzhithurai recently. The exercise conducted ahead of the rainy season was inspected by Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner for Revenue Administration T.S. Sridhar along with Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan.

A release from the DIPR said that the fire service personnel conducted the drill on how to swim to safety during floods in the Tamirabharani with the help of available rubber tubes, water cans, coconut shell, plastic barrels, empty cylinders, coracles and rubber boats. Training in administering first aid was also explained to the students and general public.

Mr. Sridhar appealed to the public to inform about any natural disaster to 1077, the toll-free number set up at the control room in the Collectorate.

The officials were instructed to keep adequate stock of necessary drugs. School and college students should learn swimming to safeguard themselves during natural disasters, he said.

Mr. Sridhar planted a sapling near the office of the Disaster Management at the Collectorate and verified the documents at the office.

Later, he conducted a department-wise review meeting and gave away orders for monthly assistance and pension scheme through Indira Gandhi National Old-Age Pension and other schemes to 29 persons. He also distributed new ration cards to nine beneficiaries.
