A four-member medical board comprising doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, on Saturday examined Dayalu Ammal, wife of DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, to ascertain whether she was medically fit to depose in the court in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation case.

The team headed by Dr. A.B. Dey, Professor and Head Department of Geriatric Medicine, included Dr. Manjari Tripathi, Professor of Neurology, Dr. Nand Kumar, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, and Dr. Parmeshwar Kumar, Senior Resident Administrator, Department of Hospital Administration. They visited Mr. Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence and examined her. Her daughter Selvi was present during the examination.

The medical board was constituted on a direction from the Supreme Court. The court passed the order on a petition by Ms. Dayalu’s daughter Selvi seeking exemption for her mother from appearing before the trial court as prosecution witness on medical ground. Her advocate told the court that Ms. Dayalu had been diagnosed with cognitive and behavioural abnormalities and is progressively and gradually losing recognition of even her near and dear ones. She is unable to move out of the house on her own.
