The Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) has decided to go it alone in the local body polls scheduled to be held soon.

According to a statement from DMK president and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, his party formed an alliance with likeminded parties for elections to the Lok Sabha and the Assembly in a bid to form a progressive government at the Centre and a democratic reime in the State.

Besides, the DMK was always careful that both at the Centre and the State no government that was “communal” and “anti-human” should be formed.

However, in the local body polls, the DMK had decided that it was not necessary to cobble together political alliances as there was no necessity to place political principles in front of the public but only basic necessities such as sanitation and health care, education, roads and drinking water.

“This decision has been taken after deep introspection,” Mr. Karunanidhi added.
