The DMK has always been in the forefront in safeguarding the interests of the fishermen and it was during the DMK regime that the they have felt safe and secure on land and on the high seas, DMK MP Kanimozhi claimed.
In a chat with a section of fisherfolk at the Pazhayar fishing hamlet in Nagapattinam district on Wednesday, she said that the DMK president and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had the welfare of the fishermen in his heart and whenever required measured up to their expectations without wasting a moment.
The DMK understood their plight and work conditions much better than any other party, the Rajya Sabha MP told the fishermen and promised that a DMK regime would do more now than ever before.

During the interaction, Ms. Kanimozhi solicited the support of the fishermen and their families for the party’s Sirkali candidate Killai Raveendran. She pointed out that a study was done on how fishing was being done in other countries and he DMK manifesto has incorporated aspects of such activities for replication in Tamil Nadu. Once the DMK was installed in power, the measures would be given immediate shape, she promised.
Ms. Kanimozhi said the fishing ban period allowance would be hiked to Rs. 5,000 while the diesel subsidy would be substantially hiked. “The defunct ice factory at Pazhayar would be revived and I would allot funds from my MP funds to construct an overhead water tank in the hamlet. I will take steps to get job avenues for the youth from the fishermen community,” she assured.
