Dindigul Corporation has intensified encroachment removal drive from Tuesday to widen prime roads to ease traffic congestion and also to beautify the city.
It has plans to widen AMC Road – between Kamarajar statue junction and Collectors’ camp office near the central bus stand. To widen the road, it has decided to take over land to a width of 22 feet from the border of the existing road.
The local vendors and shopkeepers had encroached on a width of over 30 feet of the road and made it a narrow lane, causing much inconvenience to vehicle movement.

Almost, three-fourths of more than 20 buildings on this stretch had to be demolished.
Notices were served to all the shops that encroached on AMC road near the central bus stand well in advance.
As the corporation officials started marking the land on the left side of the road, building owners started demolishing portions of their buildings since Tuesday morning. Some buildings had to be demolished completely and some others partially, said corporation officials.

This stretch was the biggest bottleneck in the city as all buses proceeding to Erode, Salem, Coimbatore, Karur and Palani and local town buses proceeding to western parts of the district had to cross this road to reach By-pass Road.
“We have already appealed to traffic police to convert the link road connecting Tiruchi Road and Salai Road into one way to regulate traffic. Widening of AMC Road will certainly ease traffic flow and ensure two-way traffic. Removal of encroachments on other prime roads will also be taken,” the officials added.
