In a move to create a sense of security among commuters and report incidents of harassment by autorickshaw drivers, the Regional Transport Office (East) has begun to affix stickers in all the autorickshaws that carry details about the owner and the driver.

Incidents of autorickshaw drivers demanding excess fare, harassments, entering into altercations with commuters and reckless driving are on the rise in the city.

However, only a few commuters report the incidents to the police. Women commuters face more problems while travelling in autorickshaws and there are no measures to instil a sense of security among them.

On Saturday, V. Jayagowri, RTO (East) along with Motor Vehicle Inspectors and officials affixed stickers in the autorickshaws that enable the commuters to know the details of the owners and the drivers. The stickers issued by the office carry details about the owner, their address with photographs and mobile numbers on the left side while name and address of the driver, driving licence number with badge number and photograph is printed on the right side of the sticker.

The sticker is pasted on the rear of the driver’s seat so that it is easily visible to the commuters.

Officials said that in case of any complaints against the driver, commuters can note down the badge number of the driver and inform the police for necessary action.

Also, women commuters can feel safe by informing their parents or relatives that they are commuting in a particular autorickshaw. They said that stickers were pasted in more than 70 per cent of the autorickshaws that comes under the division and the rest would be covered in a few days.
