January 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - SALEM:

To enable teachers adapt the curriculum to integrate special children in regular schools, a week-long training programme is being held for 40 school teachers in Thalaivasal here.

Organised by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) at the Block Development Centre in Thalaivasal, teachers were trained to handle children with autism, cerebral palsy, specific learning disabilities and visual and hearing impairment and also to prepare inclusive module for them.

Officials said that the Right to Education Act mandates inclusive classroom for children with special needs. Hence, the teachers were trained to adapt the curriculum to integrate special children in regular schools. “These teachers were handling regular students. But, they have to handle children with special needs for which they need to be equipped,” they added.
