Couple robbed at knife point in Yercaud

An elderly couple was robbed of 21 sovereign gold jewellery and Rs. 35,000 cash at their residence in Yercaud in the late hours of Wednesday.

Usmansait (78) and Nisha (68) have an estate in Yercaud and they reside near Yercaud Five Road.

On Wednesday, at 8.30 p.m. when Nisha came out of the house to feed the dog, unidentified men wearing mask barged in and pushed her into the house. The men at knife point threatened the couple to give the almirah key and they decamped with the jewellery and cash.

They also demanded Rs. 5 lakh from Usmansait and asked him to get it immediately from their relatives. They threatened him that his wife would be killed if he revealed the incident to anyone.

Usmansait left home and asked Rs. 5 lakh from his brother’s son. When he questioned him, Usmansait spilled the beans. His relatives along with neighbours rushed to the house. On seeing them, the robbers fled the scene.

DIG, Salem Range, Nagarajan and Superintendent of Police G. Subbulakshmi inspected the home and held inquiries with the couple and neighbours.

Finger print experts and sniffer dog were pressed into service. The Yercaud police registered a case and are investigating.
