Residents protest against their street ‘being neglected’

Dindigul Corporation will relay 20 prime roads within the corporation limits as part of beautification programme under the Urban Road and Infrastructure Development Scheme.

Kick-starting a road work at Sri Vadakku Kaliamman Kovil Street here on Thursday, Mayor V. Marudha Raj said that asphalt road would be laid using paver machine.

A sum of Rs. 7.4 crore had been allotted for relaying roads.

Signboards carrying the names of the streets would be installed at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.2 crore.

Median lights would be installed on AMC Road at an estimated cost of Rs. 40 lakh, the Mayor said.

The corporation had already sent proposals to the police to convert a few main roads into one way to ease traffic snarls in the city.

Twenty roads, including Govindapuram Main Road, Scheme Road, AMC Road, Salai Road, R.M. Colony Cross Street, Gopalsamudram East Bank Road, Vedapatti Road, Pillaiyarpalayam Road, Mengles Road, Sattam Pillai Road, North Car Street and streets in Narayana Nagar, LGB Compound, KMS Nagar, Anna Nagar and Andal Nagar, had been taken up for renovation.

Residents stage protest

A group of residents of Nattamaikaran Street surrounded the Mayor and officials and complained to them that their street was neglected by the corporation for a long time.

While all street roads near their area were relaid, their street was left out, they charged.

Reacting to their charges, the Mayor said that paver blocks would be laid on Nattamaikaran Street in a day.

Next phase

The street would be included in the next phase for relaying of road, he also added.

Rs. 7.4 crore had been allotted for relaying roads and signboards carrying the names of the streets would be installed
