June 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

A three-member team of heritage building consultants from Mumbai visited Kancheepuram on Friday to inspect the heritage aspects of the areas surrounding the five important historical structures in the town.

The team is said to have been engaged by the Union Ministry of Urban Development, which had announced the Rs. 500-crore Heritage Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) project for reviving the heritage of 12 cities across the country, including Kancheepuram, early this year. The team was to inspect the aspects relating to preservation of heritage structures in the selected cities.

The team, headed by Abha Narain Lambah, conservation architect and heritage building consultant, Mumbai, went around the areas where the important temples, which attract a large number of tourists, are located.

They took note of the condition of the surroundings, the flow of traffic, traditional activities and heritage buildings that exist in those areas.

Later, talking to the media, Ms. Lambah said that her team had gone through the detailed project report submitted by the Kancheepuram Municipality to the Urban Development Ministry and culled out the aspects relating to heritage buildings preservation around the historic monuments.

“We would be discussing our findings with the Ministry to evolve the measures to be initiated for preserving existing heritage aspects of the town. If needed, we would be making another visit to conduct discussions with local authorities to plug the gap in the DPR and our findings”, she added.
