Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan said here on Monday that the party was not in agreement with the resolution passed in the Assembly, which sought commuting to life imprisonment the death sentence of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

“While we are happy with most of the activities taken by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government led by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, we do not agree with the passing of this resolution as it supports terrorists,” he told reporters.

Congress members would not agree to this even if party president Sonia Gandhi supported such a move. Mr. Elangovan reiterated his demand that the party should go it alone in the local body elections.

“Majority of the Congress members in the State and Youth Congress cadre want the party to face the local body polls without the DMK (as ally). We have already informed the high command in this regard and will continue to press for contesting alone in the polls.”

Only the DMK wanted to stay with the Congress, he contended, and added that the Congress, however, did not make any move to form an alliance with the AIADMK.

On rifts within his party, Mr. Elangovan alleged that he was informed about the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee meeting only an hour before its scheduled start at 10 a.m. in Chennai on Monday.
