Commuters get baked at Sengipatti

The four-laning of the Tiruchi–Thanjavur National Highway 67 has reduced the travel time between the two towns, immensely benefitting all sections of society.

The construction of two new bridges at Ariyamangalam and Tiruverumbur in Tiruchi district and three flyovers near the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, Sengipatti, Vallam, has played a major role in reducing the travel time between Tiruchi and Thanjavur.

The NHAI built service roads at the important junctions, besides constructing well-laid bus shelters with adequate number of seats.

Sengipatti, a major town along the highway, has achieved economic growth when compared with nearby Gandarvakottai and Vallam town. Buses going to Tirukkattupalli, Poondi Basilica, TB Sanatorium, and Gandharvakottai passes through Sengipatti. A large number of students of these towns and surrounding villages studying in the professional and arts colleges situated along the highway, switch bus at Sengipatti.

Taking into consideration, its prime location, a Government Engineering College is being built by the State government. The absence of bus shelters at Sengipatti is causing hardship to the travellers.

Irrespective of the weather conditions, the commuters have to take shelter at nearby shops in the vicinity of the junction. People feel that construction of shelters, besides protecting the people from sun and rain, will benefit the travellers. The NHAI should immediately set up shelters, says Banu, a college student from Tirukkattupalli, who travel via Sengipatti to her college in Vallam. The junction adequate space to build the bus shelters on both direction, she added.
