A fact finding committee of human rights forums has alleged that E. Subramani, a painter of Pattambakkam, who was picked up by the Neyveli Township police for interrogation in connection with a murder case, had died due to torture meted out to him in police custody.
A release said the fact finding committee led by A. Marx of National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations, G. Sugumaran, Federation for People’s Rights and various other forum visited the victim’s residence at Pattambakkam on Tuesday and collected the time-line of events.
The team also disputed the claims of the police that Subramani had died due to Hepatitis.

Mr. Sugumaran alleged that Subramani was forcibly picked up from his residence in Neyveli on May 28 by a police team led by Inspector Raja and subjected to third degree torture in the police station based on eye witness account. Subramani was illegally detained for over a week and subjected to torture leading to renal failure.
The committee also condemned the police for failing to take action on the petition submitted by the victim’s wife Revathy on May 31 to senior police officials in Cuddalore alleging torture in police custody.
The committee has demanded the suspension of police personnel involved in the custodial killing of Subramani. The police should also convert the case of suspicious death into murder and hand over the probe to the CBI to ensure an impartial investigation.

The Government should also provide a compensation of Rs.25 lakh to the victim’s family.
