The official vehicle of Tirunelveli Collector M. Karunakaran was attached by the Principal Sub-Court here on Monday for the district administration’s failure to provide a compensation of Rs. 18 lakh to the heirs of three persons whose lands were acquired for establishing a control room and an information centre for INS Kattabomman in 1982.

Principal Sub-Court Judge T.V. Hemanandakumar ordered the attachment of the Collector’s vehicle, sources said.

According to sources, a total stretch of 38 acres of land was acquired near Perumalpuram here for establishing the control room and the information centre for INS Kattabomman.

Some of the landowners, including Subburayulu and his relatives Padmanabhan and Kesavan, were not content with the compensation awarded to them.

Subburayulu, Padmanabhan and Kesavan filed a case demanding more compensation.

Rs. 40 lakh awarded

The court awarded Rs. 40 lakh along with interest to the heirs of the petitioners, since they died in the meantime. Two months ago, a compensation of Rs. 22 lakh was provided to the heirs of the three landowners.

Since the compensation was not provided in full to the heirs, the judge issued orders to attach the official vehicles of the Collector and Revenue Divisional Officer, Palayamkottai. The RDO’s vehicle was not stationed at the office, and hence it could not be attached, sources said.
