Chief Electoral Officer refutes charges against Salem Collector

Assures High Court of free and fair elections in Yercaud

Refuting allegations levelled against Salem District Collector by the DMK candidate V.Maran in Yercaud by election, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Praveen Kumar submitted before the Madras High Court on Wednesday that Election Commission of India (ECI) is closely monitoring the situation.

He also stated that the ECI would take appropriate remedial action for conducting free and fair elections.

Mr. Praveen Kumar submitted this in counter affidavit to a writ petition filed by Mr. Maran who alleged the District Collector failed to act on his party complaints. The counter was filed before Justice K.K.Sasidharan when the matter came up for hearing on Wednesday.

Mr. Maran prayed the court to pass an interim injunction restraining the Collector from administering the Yercaud by-election and for a direction to the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer, to issue suitable orders transferring him.

In his counter, the CEO said wherever model of code of conduct was violated, action had been taken irrespective of persons, place and position The matter will come up for further hearing on December 3.
