A survey of tourists conducted in preparation of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan last year has revealed that Chennai tops the list, with 29 per cent of tourists coming from the city. The survey was carried out at the Promenade Beach, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple, Matrimandir in Auroville and the Chunnambar Boat House. People from other parts of Tamil Nadu made up 22 per cent of the incoming tourists. Bengaluru tourists made up 18 per cent, while 9 per cent tourists were from North India. Around 6 per cent tourists said they had come from Andhra Pradesh. The introduction of a hop-on, hop-off bus for tourists was recommended at the stakeholder meeting for the CMP, noting the high taxi and auto rickshaw charges in Puducherry.
