The Tamil Nadu Chemists and Druggists Association has urged the Centre and the State Government to impose ban on online sale of medicines.
The association, to press the demand, will launch a day-long strike in the State on October 14. Medical shops will not function on the day, K. K. Selvan, president of the association told presspersons here recently.
Various internet based business web portals are selling medicines on-line in violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. Some of these medicines fell under various schedules which required stringent conditions and license for its marketing, laying emphasis on necessity of prescription, supervision of a qualified person who is dispensing the medicines, storage conditions of the premises where the medicines are kept, he said.

Moreover, because of danger of anti-microbial resistance, the Government has already introduced Schedule H1 which mandates that the licensee maintain register of its sales data. In the internet transaction this is by-passed.
Amendments
He demanded suitable amendments to the Act to stop indiscriminate over-the-internet drug trade and save the public from its probable harmful effects.
