Chamber demands impartial removal of encroachments

June 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - Dindigul:

Members of Dindigul Chamber of Commerce came down heavily on Dindigul Corporation which, they said, was partial in removing encroachments and acquiring land for widening prime roads in the city as part of beautification plan.

At the Chamber’s 42nd general body meeting held here on Sunday, the members unanimously demanded that the Corporation should remove all encroachments impartially, keeping in mind the development of the city and the welfare of the residents.

Dindigul was upgraded into a Corporation one year ago. But there was no visible improvement. Even today, roads were in pathetic condition. Several roads were not levelled for a long time even after completion of underground drainage project in many areas.

Encroachment was rampant in the city, and many prime roads had become narrow lanes, they said. Special care should be given to improve infrastructure facilities in Dindigul on the lines of facilities created in other corporations, they insisted.

Shifting of wholesale vegetable market at Gandhiji Ground remained in paper. The market had been creating traffic congestion. Waste from the market had been posing a grave health threat to the residents, they said.

All efforts should be made to supply water to all areas in the city at least once in three days. Special care should also be made to clear garbage, they demanded .

Withdraw VAT on sugar

The Chamber also appealed to the State government to withdraw five per cent VAT imposed on sugar, and requested it to exempt two-wheeler riders in small towns and villages from wearing helmets.

Creation of water ways by linking all rivers in the State, restructuring of GST, and implementation of Villupuram-Palani, Madurai-Bodi, Dindigul Sabarimala, and Palani-Dharapuram railway projects were their other demands.

Already, small traders were highly irked as the corporation had decided to acquire 15 feet of land instead of 22 feet along a stretch for widening AMC Road, connecting the central bus stand and the city, they added.
