Centre should explain its achievements: Chidambaram

Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram has said that the State and Central governments should explain their achievements so far to the voters.

Addressing villagers at a number of places in the Alangudi Assembly constituency in the district falling under the Sivaganga Lok Sabha seat on Sunday, Mr. Chidambaram posed a series of questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the State government as well.

As for the Central government, he said that completion of one year meant 20 per cent of the five-year rule. “It is time for the voters to insist on a self-appraisal by the Central government,” he said, emphasising that the governments were accountable to the voters and should come out with their list of achievements.

He said the Centre was lagging behind in the implementation of schemes particularly the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and education loan programme.

“The 100-day job opportunity for agricultural labourers has shrunk to 40 days,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a silent spectator to serious allegations being levelled against Maharashtra Ministers and Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje, Mr. Chidambaram added.
