November 28, 2011 03:28 am | Updated 03:28 am IST - VILLUPURAM:

Following a complaint of sexual assault on Irula tribal women of Thirukkoilur block near here, cases have been booked against “unidentified policemen.” One of the alleged victims had filed a complaint with Superintendent of Police M. Bhaskaran on Saturday narrating the incident in which she and three other women were illegally confined and sexually abused by four policemen attached to the Thirukkoilur police station on November 22.

Since they could not name the policemen involved in the incident, cases invoking Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 427 (causing damage to currency notes), 363 (kidnapping) and Section 376 (rape) read with Section 3 (1) (12) of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were booked against certain unidentified policemen.

She alleged that on November 22 three policemen came to her house located at T. Mandapam in the Thirukkoilur block and took her husband M. Kasi (22) to the police station on the pretext of conducting an inquiry into a theft case.

Later, four more policemen came and told her and her relatives that their presence was needed in the police station for the purpose of investigation. When they got into the police van along with five men, the police took them to a densely wooded area. They allegedly separated the women and took them to a secluded spot and outraged their modesty. The policemen dropped the women at their houses on the morning of November 23.

It is also alleged that the police ransacked their houses and took away Rs. 2,000 in cash, 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery and four cellphones.
