Security has been enhanced in Karur and its vicinity in the wake of protests and incidents of stone pelting on government buses over the past two days by persons protesting what they call derogatory references to the Kongu Vellalar community in a novel written by Puliyur Murugesan.
A case was booked against Mr. Murugesan by the Pasupathipalayam police on Thursday on a complaint from the Puliyur Perunkudi Arakkatalai president under various IPC sections including 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), police sources said.
Acting on a complaint lodged by Mr. Murugesan, the Pasupathipalayam police booked a case against few persons under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation), for assaulting and threatening the Tamil writer.
Police sources said that as part of enhanced security measure in the wake of the stone pelting incidents, a company of Tamil Nadu Special Police besides Armed Reserve personnel, has been deployed in the town.
Pickets have been posted at various points in Karur town including Thirukampuliyur, Vennamalai, Manohara corner and Semmadai with police officers instructed to carry out rounds.
Police sources said that seven persons were arrested on the charge of pelting stones at Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses at different places in Karur on Thursday. The accused were later remanded.
