Unidentified burglars, who stole Rs. 1.10 lakh from a house in Palayamkottai, set fire to furniture, dresses and wardrobe as they could not find any valuables in the house around noon on Tuesday.

Police said that the burglars, who entered the house of Venkatachalam of Darling Nagar in Palayamkottai when the inmates had gone to Tenkasi to attend a marriage, took away the cash and searched for gold ornaments. When they could not find any valuables, they set fire to the wooden cots, mattresses, dresses and wardrobes. Household goods in two rooms were completely destroyed in the fire. “A few property documents were also destroyed in the fire,” Mr. Venkatachalam said.

On noticing smoke billowing from the house, the neighbours alerted Mr. Venkatachalam who was at Tenkasi, the police and the fire and rescue services personnel. Palayamkottai Crime Branch police have registered a case.
