Two days after the post mortem was conducted at the Government Headquarters Hospital here, family members of Syed Mohammed (22), allegedly shot dead by Sub Inspector of Police at the SP Pattinam police station, received the body on Friday and buried it amid tight security.
Led by local MLA and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) leader M H Jawahirullah, about 200 people, including members of various Muslim outfits such as Popular Front of India and Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhgam (TMMK) came to the Government Hospital here and received the body around 4 p.m.
A tense situation prevailed on Wednesday, when family members, backed by Muslim outfits refused to accept the body, demanding registration of murder case against A Kalidoss, the Sub Inspector of police. Calm and tranquillity prevailed on Friday when S Sahubar Ali, maternal uncle of the deceased, received the body.

The body was taken to SP Pattinam in a convoy with police escort and buried after funeral prayers amid elaborate police security. A posse of police, led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Sivaganga) Tamizhchelvan and Tiruvadanai Deputy Superintendent of Police P Sekar formed the security.
Talking to reporters at the hospital and addressing after funeral prayers, Mr. Jawahirulla said the killing of Syed Mohammed should be the last custodial death in the State and demanded that the police initiate action against A Kalidoss after registering a case against him under section 302 of IPC.
He said the deceased, who is survived by his ailing mother, brother and sister was the only breadwinner of the family and urged the government to provide Rs. 5 lakh more to the family as compensation and a government job to a family member.

The Popular Front of India welcomed the transfer of the case to Crime Branch CID police for investigation and urged the government to enhance the compensation.
