The Tamil Nadu government, which introduced Bills to streamline the appointment of vice chancellors in 13 State-run universities under the higher education department last week, introduced three more Bills on Tuesday in the Assembly, paving the way for the adoption of similar procedure for the fisheries, law and Tamil universities.
The Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (Amendment) Act, 2017, the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (Amendment) Act, 2017, and the Tamil University (Amendment) Act, 2017, were introduced by Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar, School Education Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan (on behalf of the Law Minister) and Hindu Religious &Charitable Endowments and Tamil Official Language Minister Sevoor S. Ramachandran respectively.
The Bills lay down the qualifications needed for academicians to be appointed as VCs of these universities, and set a time limit of six months to complete the entire process. They prescribe qualification requirements for members of the search committee, which would recommend a panel of names, from which the chancellor would select the person to be appointed as VC.
