Bhoomi puja for building a high-class cricket stadium near Anna University College of Engineering at Pullangudi near here was performed on Thursday..

Ramanathapuram District Cricket Association has entered into an agreement with Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) to develop the high- standard cricket stadium in the district.

After bhoomi puja, Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan, himself an avid cricketer, and L.S. Logidasan, chairman of LSK Group of Companies, which helped the association clear the area, laid the foundation stone.

Association secretary K.T. Prabakaran said that the district administration had allotted 12 acres of land and the stadium would be developed in eight acres.

In the first phase, an office building, two gallery sheds and players hall would be built at a cost of Rs. 26 lakh with financial assistance from the district administration under the Namakku Name Scheme and sponsors.

The association would complete the work in a month before taking up pitch laying and outfield development in a phased manner, he said.

District Sports and Youth Welfare Officer R. Venkataraman said that the construction of the office building and levelling work would go on simultaneously, after which, the TNCA would help the association lay the pitch and develop the outfield with grass imported from Australia.
