Be ready to face monsoon, Minister tells officials

The State Government is urging district administrations, especially those along the coastal belt, to brace for the North-east monsoon.

Preparations for meeting the public requirements during the period have already commenced across the State, Revenue Minister R. B. Udhayakumar said here on Saturday. Speaking at the N-E Monsoon preparedness meets held in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur, Mr. Udhayakumar observed that the monsoon was expected to set over the State after October 25.

All the 32 district administrations have been alerted and sensitised to meet the urgent requirements arising due to monsoon. Bridges, culverts, highways, roads and other infrastructure stability and worthiness have been reviewed and safe shelters have been identified, the Minister said, adding 24 hour control rooms have been established to monitor the situation.

Participating at the meeting in Thanjavur, Agriculture Minister R. Doraikkannu said that a district- level committee has been formed to coordinate efforts to tackle the vagaries of monsoon, especially in the coastal districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Pudukkottai. District Collector A. Annadurai and other officials detailed the steps taken so far.
