The girl baby of a Bangladeshi woman lodged in the Mandapam refugee camp was handed over to the Social Welfare Department under the ‘cradle baby scheme.’

The 21-year-old woman, who gave birth to the child at the District Headquarters Hospital three months ago, did not want the child as she would soon be sent to Bangladesh, official sources said.

After she expressed the desire to handover the child to the State under the ‘cradle baby scheme,’ the hospital authorities handed over the baby to the Social Welfare Department on Monday, Hospital Superintendent K. Krishnamoorthy said.

After completing the formalities, Social Welfare Officer R. Malaiarasi presented the child to Collector K. Nanthakumar and the Collector, in turn, handed over the child to the Grace Kennett Foundation, the Madurai-based adoption Centre, the same day.

Two social workers from the centre came to the Collectorate and received the baby. The centre would take care of the baby till some eligible couple came forward to adopt the child.

More than 200 people have registered with the centre for adopting babies, sources said.
