Bandh evokes good response in Karur

The bandh against the Karnataka’s plan to build reservoir at Mekedatu across the Cauvery river received good response in Karur.

Although normal life was not affected in the district, most shops and business establishments downed shutters in support of the bandh call. Except pharmacies and tea shops, most hotels, restaurants, textiles shops. and others remained closed on Saturday.

As many as 59 persons owing allegiance to Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) were detained by the police when they attempted to enter the railway station at Vellianai to stage rail roko. Similarly, 11 persons were arrested at Karur railway junction. There were reports that the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) staged protests in a few places, condemning the move of the Karnataka government to construct dam.
