Awareness rally taken out

A large number of students and NSS volunteers took out a rally here on Sunday in view of National Voters Day to create awareness of significance of casting vote in elections.

Collector M. Ravikumar flagged of the rally near Rajaji Park on Palayamkottai Road which proceeded through VVD signal, Anna Nagar Road and concluded near the community welfare hall at Toovipuram.

The participants carried placards which stated that voting was a fundamental democratic and human right. The campaigners also took a pledge on the occasion.

The Collector appealed to the eligible people to enrol themselves in the electoral roll. Earlier, he distributed the new version of electoral photo identity cards (EPIC) to some of the newly enrolled voters. Prizes were also given to students, who won in elocution and essay writing competitions conducted as part of voter awareness programme.

The newly enrolled voters could get their EPICs from Booth-Level Officers deputed in 1,521 polling booths across the district, he said. As per the previous electoral rolls released here on January 5 after the completion of summary revision, the draft roll included an addition of 45,298 voters. The revised electoral roll had an addition of 22,165 men, 23,122 women and 11 others. The district comprising six Assembly segments has a total electorate of 13,37,996 – 6,63,505 men, 6,74476 women and 15 others.
