Anti-sabotage checks at venue of Advani’s meeting in Salem

Vehicles will be checked at border between the State and Karnataka

The city police, including the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), carried out anti-sabotage checks at Maravaneri Extension, where senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani is scheduled to address a meeting on August 1. It is in this area that members of the family of State BJP general secretary V. Ramesh, who was hacked to death by a gang on July 19, are residing.

The BDDS personnel checked the residential premises of Ramesh and also checked the vacant lands and construction materials dumped in the area. They, additionally, checked the vehicles on other residential premises.

Door-to-door checks

A team of city police also made door-to-door checks and inquired about members in the family, vehicles they had, their professions and their regular movement. They were asked not to encourage visitors to their houses till Friday.

The people in the neighbourhood were asked to inform the police about the movement of strangers in the area.

Meanwhile, police personnel from other districts started arriving in the district on Tuesday, apart from the commandos from National Security Guards (NSG). Senior police officials said that though there was no specific threat to the VIP visit, elaborate bandobust was made, including posting of heavy police personnel at the airport, Ramesh’s residence and the venue of the shraddanjali meeting. Police were stationed on high-rise buildings and vehicles were subject to thorough checks at Kolathur and Palar, border between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
