Amma canteens to come up in Theni district

In six municipalities at an estimated cost of Rs.1.45 crore

Amma canteens will be set up in all six municipalities in the district at an estimated cost of Rs.1.45 crore, according to Collector K.S. Palanisamy.

Addressing a special meeting here on Wednesday, he said the main purpose of these canteens was to offer food at affordable costs to the common man.

The Collector said the existing buildings would be renovated to house a canteen at Kamarjar central bus stand in Theni-Allinagaram municipality at an estimated cost of Rs.25 lakh, and at Goodalur central bus stand at an estimated cost of Rs.20 lakh.

New buildings would be constructed on Periyandavar High Road in Bodinayakkanur near daily market, on Swathantra Street in Thenkarai in Periyakulam municipality, on bus stand campus at Chinnamanur and on the campus of Government Hospital in Cumbum, each at an estimated cost of Rs.25 lakh. Construction of building for these canteens would be completed by July 31, he added.

Selection of the SHGs to man these canteens was under process.

Instructions had already been given to municipal officials to develop kitchen, spacious dining hall and special seating facilities for the elderly.

Water and basic amenities like toilets should be provided within the campus of each of the Amma canteen for the benefit of the public.

Later, Mr. Palanisamy inspected development works being done at an estimated cost of Rs.7.76 crore in Kadamalaigundu union.

A bridge was being constructed at an estimated cost or Rs.4.4 crore across the Vaigai to provide road connectivity to Murukodai and Rayarkottai villages on the Varushanadu hill.

He said drinking water scheme meant for Moolakadai, green houses in Myladumparai union, and an overhead tank at Athankaraipatti were also undertaken. He asked the officials concerned to complete the works on time.
