DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday said posters that had come up in the city recently on the occasion of his elder son M. K. Alagiri’s birthday were part of a plot to divide his party.

These posters – in the name of little-known DMK functionaries – were seen as potentially divisive by the party leadership, which issued a warning to party workers that disciplinary action would be taken against those involved.

The contents were seen as insinuations that the followers of Mr. Alagiri would prevail in the event of a factional contest.

However, it also said the real identity of those responsible for the posters was not known. Mr. Karunanidhi said on Wednesday that he was sure that his sons – M.K. Stalin and M.K. Alagiri – had nothing to do with posters put up in the city. And that it was the handiwork of some mysterious persons.

“They have called themselves Venkat and Ramana and are seeking to project themselves as supporters of party seniors. They are acting as agents of the conspiracy to split the party, but they will never succeed in their attempt and will bite the dust,” he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi said they could not be identified now, but anyone who tried to undermine the DMK and his leadership would not last long. “The truth will come out one day.”
