As many as 93 members of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) courted arrest here on Monday while they attempted to lay siege to the Collectorate in support of their demands. It was led by P. Santhana Sekar, district secretary.
They urged the Central and State governments not to transform Tamil Nadu into a desert by destroying natural resources and demanded the formation of Cauvery Management Board at the earliest to protect the interest of farmers. The arrested were released later.
The members staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate in Tirunelveli also demanding the conservation of nature. They said the Centre should scrap plans to execute hydrocarbon, neutrino observatory and methane projects in the State.

Tasmac shop
A section of people from Maharajapuram of Zamin Kodangipatti in Vilathikulam taluk approached Thoothukudi Collectorate and sought the intervention of district administration to prevent Tasmac authorities from setting up any liquor shop at Maharajapuram.
In a petition to Collector N. Venkatesh, the villagers claimed that the authorities had been planning to bring up a liquor shop against the interest of local people.

Action sought
Some employees of State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), along with the members of their families, thronged the Collectorate, demanding action against SETC authorities in Thoothukudi citing work pressure.
In a petition to Collector by A. Murugesan, president, SETC Employees Association, Thoothukudi branch, they said ‘anti-labour’ steps were being taken against the employees to work on 12 to 13 days of long distance travel against the wishes of employees.
