Condemning the alleged attack on the district president of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), I. Gnanasoundari, and demanding the arrest of the attackers, members of the AIDWA staged a demonstration near the Head Post Office in Suramangalam here on Monday.
Led by its district secretary K. Rajathi and district treasurer N. Jeyalakshmi, speakers including State president S. Valentina and State secretary K. Jothilakshmi condemned the attack.
They said that on October 12, a woman from Gandhi Nagar area submitted a petition to Gnanasoundari stating that she was engaged to D. Ganesan, an auto driver. However, citing different caste, he refused to marry her, she claimed. Since, the family of Ganesan refused to speak, AIDWA decided to approach the Assistant Commissioner, Suramangalam Zone. On October 15, Gnanasoundari visited the police station along with the affected victim. But Ganesan and his relatives allegedly attacked Gnanasoundari and threatened her.

The gang also went to the house of Gnanasoundari and allegedly threatened the family members and attacked them.
“If a gang can attack a woman on the police station premises, where is the safety for woman”, they questioned. They said that the victims were also a home guard and no action has been taken by the police against her complaint.
Protestors demanded action against the attackers and also justice for the victim.
