The DMK MP Kanimozhi on Wednesday blamed the AIADMK government’s negligence for the continuing power crisis in Tamil Nadu. The State would not have faced such a severe energy crisis if only the ruling AIADMK had implemented the power projects started by the earlier DMK government, she said.

Campaigning for the DMK nominee for Cuddalore Lok Sabha constituency K. Nandagopalakrishnan here on Tuesday, Ms. Kanimozhi said that the Jayalalithaa government seemed to be keen on ignoring the development initiatives of former Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi.

She said the effort made by the DMK to set up a government medical college at Cuddalore, was also scuttled. The Karunanidhi regime had waived Rs. 7,000 crore in farm loans to help farmers affected by the vicissitudes of nature. But, the farmers were now distraught because of a prolonged drought and no prospect of water from other sources for irrigation, she said adding, the sugarcane farmers did not get remunerative prices.

Ms. Kanimozhi said the AIADMK government, which promised to provide 20 litres of protected drinking water per head, was now selling one litre of bottled water for Rs.10. The rice meant for the Public Distribution System was used in “Amma canteens.” As the 10 p.m. deadline drew near, she spoke for a few minutes at Bhuvanagiri in support of VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan re-contesting from Chidambaram.
