MADURAI

One of the accused in the sensational murder of ‘Pottu’ Suresh, against whom a non-bailable warrant was issued as he had failed to appear for trial for more than a year, surrendered before Judicial Magistrate Court IV here on Friday.

According to police, P. Thirumurugan alias ‘Kattuvasi’ Murugan from Keerathurai, aged about 35 years, was the 16th accused in the ‘Pottu’ Suresh murder case, which is being handled by the CB-CID and for which the trial is presently in progress.

He is also an accused in the 2007

Dinakaran newspaper office attack case, for which an appeal is presently pending at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

‘Kattuvasi’ Murugan was an accomplice of ‘Attack’ Pandi, the prime accused in the murder, who was arrested in Mumbai in September 2015 after eluding arrest ever since the murder in January 2013, police sources said.

A senior police officer said ‘Kattuvasi’ Murugan had failed to appear for the trial of the case for more than a year. “Since a non-bailable warrant was consequently issued, we tried to nab him but he had a narrow escape last week,” he said.

On appearing before the court on Friday, ‘Kattuvasi’ Murugan provided a surety and assured the court that he would henceforth appear for the trial without fail, following which the non-bailable warrant issued against him was withdrawn.
