The Public Works Department has taken up work on widening a narrow culvert built during the French regime on the Neravy Road in the town.

A box-culvert with two vents is under construction in the area.

The wider box-culvert will ensure speedy and swift discharge of storm water during the North East monsoon. “In the past, the entire Neravy Road and surrounding areas got waterlogged due to slow discharge of water under the French-built culvert,” an official source told

The new one would ensure smooth flow. The breadth of the new culvert was being doubled from the existing 5.5 metres.

The old narrow culvert had led to frequent traffic snarls. It became difficult for road users and motorists to manoeuvre the stretch. No two heavy vehicles could cross it simultaneously and the widening of the culvert would ensure smooth traffic movement.

The height of the box culvert would also be increased.
