July 17, 2010 12:52 am | Updated 12:52 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Central Crime Branch police on Friday arrested two persons, including an employee of the Directorate of Collegiate Education, in connection with the fake mark sheets case.

Commissioner of Police (in-charge) Sanjay Arora said special teams formed to investigate the case arrested Ekambaram (57), a record clerk in the Directorate of Collegiate Education, and Tiruvengadam (60), retired assistant headmaster of Arani (Tiruvannamalai district). Forty-eight fake mark sheets were seized from Tiruvengadam.

Of the ten fake mark sheets detected during counselling for MBBS admissions here, the suspects had supplied three. Their modus operandi was to approach students who applied for revaluation in Plus Two examinations and promise higher marks.

“Preliminary enquiries revealed that they took Rs.10,000 from each of the three students. Since revaluation results are sent by registered post to the candidates, it is not clear whether the students were aware of the fake mark sheets,” Mr. Arora said.

The accused were booked under various charges, including cheating and forgery. “Investigation is on to apprehend others involved in the case. Of the ten students who had knowingly or unknowingly submitted fake mark sheets, nine were girls,” he said.

Details as to where the sheets were procured or printed and how many students were given fake mark sheets are under investigation, police sources said.
