Train service on main line likely from April 15

Train services are likely to begin on the main line from April 15 according to Deepak Kishan, General Manager, Southern Railways.

He told presspersons at Aduthurai near Kumbakonam on Friday that gauge conversion work has been completed on the main line. Railway Safety commissioner has inspected the track on March 16 and certified it fit for operating passenger trains.

Some more works are to be completed with resepct to necessary infrastructure between Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai. These works will be completed by April 10. “In all probability, train services may start on the main line from April 15” Mr. Kishan said.

Asked whether all the trains that were running on the main line before gauge conversion will be operated now, the general manager said that all the old trains plus some additional trains may be operated on the main line.

Meanwhile, Thiruvidaimaruthur MLA R.K. Bharathi Mohan, in a memorandum to the general manager, said that all passenger and express trains should halt at Aduthurai and at least 20 berths to Chennai should be exclusively reserved for passengers from the town.
