Electricity generation in the first 210 MW unit of Thoothukudi Thermal Power Station was hit on Friday following technical snag. Though the TTPS has 5 X 210 MW units, only the first and the fifth unit were generating power as the remaining three remained idle.

After wind power generation increased phenomenally and demand for electricity dwindled, power generation in the second, third and the fourth units of TTPS was stopped and minor maintenance works were being carried out to restart these units anytime now.

In other words, only the first and the fifth units were generating power.

As a technical malfunction crippled the first unit of TTPS at 6.10 a.m. on Friday, the fifth unit alone was humming to generate 210 MW electricity.

“Even as our engineers are working intensely to rectify the technical glitch at the earliest, the second, third and the fourth units, which had been stopped, are ready now for power generation. When the demand for power goes up and we get subsequent order from our higher-ups, all three units will start generating power in no time. And, the first unit will also resume power generation once the technical snag is sorted out,” said sources in the TTPS.

As informed by a senior official, the second, third and the fourth units became operational at 5.30 p.m. following instructions from the TANGEDCO.
