Tamirabarani tragedy anniversary observed

The anniversary of ‘Tamirabarani tragedy’ in which 17 persons drowned when a rally taken out by political parties in support of Manjolai tea estate workers turned violent in 1999, was observed by various political parties here on Saturday.

Cadres of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), led by its president Thol. Thirumavalavan and men from parties of Puthiya Tamilagam and Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam led by its founder John Pandian paid floral tributes to those who drowned in the river.

Earlier, a silent procession was taken out from Vannarpettai to Kokkirakulam where the victims drowned.

Dignitaries from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), Naam Tamilar Katchi and other parties also paid tributes.

Tirunelveli City police made adequate security arrangements with deployment of police personnel at several locations to prevent untoward incident.
