Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj on Friday allayed fears that medical shops would be raided for merely holding stocks of expired drugs.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at the Government General Hospital here, Mr. Subburaj said action would not be taken against medical shops for possessing expired drugs. “No action will be taken for holding expired drugs. Pharmacies can keep the drugs but they should not sell it to consumers. The medicines should be sent through the proper channel for disposal.”
To a question on police raids on medical shops, he said: “Police assistance will be taken only when there is crime; otherwise, drug inspectors will conduct the regular inspection.”

Surveillance on medical shops across the State had been intensified after the recent seizure of expired drugs from unauthorised stockists in the city.
So far, 10 persons had been arrested and another four or five persons were absconding, Mr. Subburaj added.
