Over 50 students of Government Forest College and Research Institute in Mettupalayam took part in an avifauna field study in the wetlands of Kanyakumari district on Friday.
Environment educator S.S. Davidson said that the students were taken for a participatory field study to the wetlands of Suchindrum lake, Manikaputhery pond, Thathaiyar pond, Theroor ponds, etc.
They spotted open-billed stork, egrets of various types, pond heron, painted storks, dab chick, lesser cormorant and greater cormorant in these waterbodies.

They were explained about wetland ecosystem, geographical positions, rainfall pattern, concept of bird migration, ringing and collaring of birds, food pattern, nesting habits, wetland birds of Kanyakumari, migratory birds and local migrants.
Students were taken to Interpretation Centre at Suchindrum, where the characteristic chirping sound of each individual bird, habitat, movement and flying pattern of various birds of Kanyakumari were displayed.
