Rs. 1.49 cr. sanctioned to establish coir cluster

The National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre, headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, had sanctioned Rs. 1.49 crore for the proposed ‘Coir Cluster’ in Ethamozhi in Kanniyakumari district, said Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan here on Wednesday.

A release issued by the Minister’s office said to rejuvenate the traditional coir industry, it was proposed to establish a coir cluster at an estimated cost of Rs. 2 crore. The State government would sanction the remaining amount.

The cluster would provide a sustained employment in the sector through innovative methods of production and introduction of new coir products in the market, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.
