As many as 255 vacancies in the sanctioned strength of 1,400 in the Railway Police will be filled up soon, said Inspector-General of Police K.C. Mahali on Friday.
He was talking to reporters after the annual routine inspection of the railway police stations at Coimbatore and Podanur.
Mr. Mahali said that staff strength for railway police used to be drafted from the local police units such as nearby districts and city police. Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) K. Radhakrishnan has already issued orders to the local police unit heads to provide with the required strength for filling up the vacancies. These personnel would be working with railway police on a rotation basis.

Railway Police have 33 stations and six Deputy Superintendents of Police for protecting 4,000 km route length of railway lines.
