Pudukottai medical college admissions likely next year

The Government Medical College and Hospital under construction here may commence admissions from 2017-18. The initial intake of the college will be 150 students. The civil work on hospital, college, and quarters for the hospital staff and teaching faculty is progressing at a brisk pace.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa sanctioned the Rs. 229-crore project in August last year. The Chief Minister laid the foundation for the college and hospital on March 1. The college is coming up on 127 acres of land at Mullur village. According to sources, Rs. 108 crore had been allocated for the hospital and Rs. 61.31crore for quarters. A sum of Rs. 59.16 crore had been allocated for administrative buildings. The plinth area of the complex will be around 85,000 square metres.

It includes 41,309 square metres for the college, 22,298 square metres for quarters, and 20,463 square metres for administrative buildings. Work was executed simultaneously so that the hospital and the quarters would be ready.

A team of officials, led by R. Vimala, Director of Medical Education, recently inspected the site under construction at Mullur on Pudukottai–Thanjavur highway on the outskirts of the town.
