'Poompuhar' wipes out losses and earns profit

The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (‘Poompuhar’) made a record turnover of Rs. 25.22 crore during 2008-2009.

As a result, the organisation, founded in 1973, not only cleared its accumulated losses of about Rs. 3.24 crore but also registered a net profit of Rs. 2.21 crore.

On Monday, Pongalur N. Palanisamy, Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister, presented to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi a cheque for around Rs.16.42 lakh towards the State government’s share.

In 2007-2008, the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) made a profit of around Rs. 8.48 crore. Last year, the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation (TANSI)’s turnover was Rs. 128.31 crore and its profit Rs. 80.72 crore.

The Minister also presented to the Chief Minister two more cheques, one for Rs.87 lakh out of the SIDCO’s profit and another for Rs. 18.51 crore out of the TANSI’s profit.
