January 14, 2011 12:51 am | Updated 12:51 am IST - TIRUPUR

Police pickets were posted outside the Sainik School at Amaravathi Nagar near Udumalpet in Tirupur district in Tamil Nadu on Thursday following condemnation by some outfits, including the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, of the school's calendar featuring a photograph of a cadet shaking hands with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The outfits had demanded withdrawal of the calendar featuring the picture of Mr. Rajapaksa.

“We have posted police personnel as a precautionary measure,” Superintendent of Police A. Arun said.

The calendar was brought out by the Sainik School Society in New Delhi for all 24 Sainik Schools in the country. The cadet in question is from the Sainik School at Goalpara in Assam.

Official sources told The Hindu that the photograph, among the 48 in the calendar, was taken during a youth exchange programme of NCC cadets from the country to Sri Lanka last year.

The student of the Goalpara Sainik School was a member of that team, the sources said.
