In appreciation:Senior Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis rewarding police personnel for early detection of cases in Thoothukudi on Tuesday.

Police personnel in the district were rewarded for quickly cracking various cases reported in different subdivisions. Senior Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis distributed certificates of appreciation to them here on Tuesday.

Later addressing reporters, Mr. Kotnis said police action was swift in detecting the double murder case reported in Pazhayakayal under Authoor police limits on March 8. In a short time, charge sheets were filed against 21 accused. Twelve of the accused in the case were detained under the Goondas Act.

Another murder case was cracked by a team of police personnel attached to Thoothukudi North police station.

A jeweller, Gopal of Madurai, left for Thoothukudi on June 16 for some business. But, he was abducted by a six-member robber gang on the way in Virudhunagar district and murdered.

His body was dumped in a well.

As he did not return home for long, his wife contacted the police officials here. The gang left Gopal’s mobile phone at a public place in Thoothukudi after erasing all data to make it appear like a murder committed by his “enemies” in Thoothukudi.

The phone, retrieved by the police, served to be vital evidence. Three men, accused in the case, were arrested.

Besides, crimes such as theft, house break-in, chain snatching and bike lifting were also detected very quickly this year.

Mr. Kotnis said 35 locations in the district had been brought under CCTV camera surveillance and it acted as a deterrent to incidence of crimes.
